With summer just around the corner, it’s time for a series of compact party speakers to hit the ether. Time to start adding an inexpensive mini speaker to your shopping list for a barbecue, vacation or picnic.
Just days after the unveiling of the JBL Go 5, we’ve been shown a new Tribit alternative – and although it’s small in size, it’s a big deal. This is the StormBox Micro 3, currently on sale for $64.99 / £62.99 (about AU$130).
We gave the StormBox Micro 2 a glowing five-star review, and it looks like Tribit is sticking to its previous winning formula for this new model…

The draw of these compact speakers is the scale: they’re the size of a palm, and like their older siblings, the Micro 3 comes with a mounting system you can use to strap it to bags, bike handlebars and back seats. But what is really new?
Development in Micro
The Micro 3 has a more rounded design than its previous generation counterpart, and twice as long battery life: 24 hours. Your adventures can be twice as long, and your neighbors can be kept longer (a lot).
You get a much louder speaker as well, with an output power of 13W up from 10W for the Micro 2, to make your summer sound. I couldn’t find any information about the driver on the previous models, but here is a 48mm with two coax radiators.
The Micro 3 is also protected, with an IP68 rating and military-grade drop resistance, so it’s perfect for tough tours and outdoor drops. The previous model was only IP67, so the third-generation Micro can withstand deep immersion in water (for a limited time).
You won’t find a new killer feature in the Tribit StormBox Micro 3; instead, there is a selection of minor spec upgrades and tweaks to make it a slightly better model. That’s because the price increase is small enough to be ignored.
This could end up being a nice little JLab, LG Xboom and JBL-beater if you’re looking for something cute and portable. But we’ll have to see what else comes out before summer is truly here — and we’ll give you a full review later.
But our sound editor Becky Scarrott has always loved the Stormbox Micro system, telling me: “I’ve used these since the first generation. The 2020 option and the sound is hot, clear and louder than you’d expect from a small palm-sized speaker. Also, the elastic rubber strap on the back makes it very easy to carry my tent handles, my tent handles and my rucksack and the like, Honestly, I love these little speakers, and that’s JBL’s strength.
So, you know, that’s high praise…
