- Capcom has told investors and fans that they will not use AI for game content generation
- It still plans to use AI to boost productivity, though
- Broadly speaking, Nvidia’s DLSS 5 remains part of the company’s plans for the future
The backlash against Nvidia’s DLSS 5, and its use of generative AI to try to ‘improve’ visuals and realism in games, has forced the hand of the popular game publisher and developer to reassure fans about its position in relation to AI.
As reported by Notebookcheck, Capcom announced in a recent Q&A session for investors that it will not be using artificial intelligence in games. This comes after Capcom’s involvement with Nvidia, and the use of DLSS 5, was made clear, leaving fans (and even developers) concerned about the state of Capcom’s AI.
Addressing the controversial topic, Capcom said: “Our company will not use our AI-generated content in game content. However, we plan to actively use this technology to improve efficiency and productivity in the game development process.

“Therefore, we are currently exploring ways to use it in various areas such as graphics, audio, and programming.”
Houses of Capcom Bad Need for Residents (and apparently upcoming games) will feature DLSS 5, and while it will be optional for players to use the technology, it’s a fine line Capcom is walking in terms of the AI it produces here.
Using DLSS 5 arguably still counts as using productive AI in games, as it has been shown to change some scenery and character details. That said, this isn’t very clear, and delivering DLSS 5 doesn’t technically count as the use of production AI assets or materials (props or artwork) as we’ve seen. The Crimson Desertas Nvidia explained.
A helping hand?
The good news is that Capcom’s use of generative AI (outside of DLSS 5) should help developers when creating concept art or other ideas around game environments.
However, Capcom’s assurance may not sit well with fans, especially given the fear that DLSS 5 could serve as the first step to make artificial intelligence a mainstay of games – or worse, open the gate to artificial intelligence used in games.
DLSS 5 and many other types of AI pose a serious threat to the game’s handcrafted, unique artwork, and threaten the lives of developers, given the game industry’s recent trend of mass layoffs.
At this rate, it seems that players can only hope that AI is kept as far away from the game world as possible, and fan backlash can help achieve that.
