Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 review: a two-minute review
The ATH-ADX7000 are Audio-Technica’s open-back headphones, with a lightweight design that’s sturdy but just 270g. They deliver exceptional low-end power and a wide, precise soundstage, with confidence and clarity no matter what kind of music you throw at it. They are incredibly expensive, but if you can afford a pair you will be very happy with your purchase. Some of the best wired headphones at the moment? Oh, for emphasis.
These are pretty loud headphones – 490 ohms – and that means you’ll need a decently powerful amp to drive them. But get that right and they will reward you endlessly.

That price means these are in audiophile territory; this is the flagship set serious headphones are made for people who want the best of everything and can afford it.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 headphones feature HDXT drivers, precision-molded to deliver a perfectly round diaphragm. The main driver is 58mm with round driver components (baffle plate, magnet, voice coil and diaphragm) for what Audio-Technica says is a more precise, dynamic and detailed sonic performance. It’s paired with a high-impedance 490-ohm voice coil that promises fast transients and a defined low end.
The ATX-ADX7000s come with two detachable 3m (9.8′) nylon-wound cables, one balanced with a 4-pin XLRM connector (but not a balanced 4.4mm connector; the expectation is that you’ll be using a desktop or hi-fi amp here) and the other with a 6.3mm cable for 6.3mm gold-plated unpaired (6.3mm) headphones. they have gold-tipped A2DC connectors.

With a frequency response of 5Hz to 50kHz, the ATH-ADX7000 has a very impressive low end and airy highs, delivering a slightly warm mid-range sound. Regardless of genre or format I didn’t need access to EQ on any of my vinyl, CDs or files; even when it’s well messed up, it sounds complicated The Mojo from Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom project, which drops huge sub-bass choruses with distorted guitars on top and has defeated many headphones, did not emphasize the Audio-Technicas at all.
These are very high powered headphones and on a Mac my SSL2 interface was difficult to drive; while it happily drove more demanding headphones it wasn’t strong enough for these, and it sounded like I was getting a six out of ten when I needed an eight or nine. Switching it to my iFi Zen 2 DAC improved things dramatically, not just because of the extra power but because the ATH-ADX7000s can really breathe. What was just fun turned into a full blown anthem.
I laughed so hard when the bass dropped on SOPHIE’s Reasons Whyand the Beastie Boys’ Root Down I shook the air as if I had big speakers strapped to my head. Little Simz’ Aim and Kill it was well detailed, its punchy bassline, interlaced vocals and brassy blasts well pitched. Radiohead’s The Reckoner had a dramatic presence, the Audio-Technicas giving the layered vocals great separation as the guitars rang out on the left channel and the bass guitar played on the right. Photo of Led Zeppelin When the Levee Breaks it was the best I’ve ever heard, all of John Paul Jones’ bass parts contrasted with John Bonham’s booming drums and Jimmy Page’s slide guitar.
Bass was something of a recurring theme in my testing because the ATH-ADX7000 headphones deliver it very well, even if it’s the thumb slaps and slides on the Blue Nile’s. Tinseltown in the rain; arpeggiated synth on Robyn’s Dopamine; BLACKPINK’s dubstep hit Go away; Adam Clayton’s grinding bass on U2’s Vertigo; or Tony Levin’s percussive, metronomic bass pulse and loud marching in Peter Gabriel’s live version Digging in the Dirt. Listening and hearing Horace Pace’s glorious Precision bass on The Specials’ Ghost Town it was close to a religious experience.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 headphones have an open back thanks to the handcrafted aluminum honeycomb grille that doesn’t look like it’s there when you’re looking directly at it – even though it’s very powerful and blocks out unwanted side air.
The large ear pads come with a choice of velvet and Alcantara cushions that promise to subtly change the sound – velvet for “well-balanced” sound and Alcantara for extra warmth – and the headphones use a lightweight magnesium frame with a wide, open band. I found the headphones to be very comfortable even during long listening sessions. And unlike in-ear designs that were always there when I was at my desk working in front of a large display.
Each pair of ATH-ADX7000 is laser engraved with its serial number and comes with a sturdy aluminum carrying case.

These are the best headphones I’ve ever tested, delivering incredible clarity and realism for open-back headphones with the kind of low-end punch you’d normally need. Their light weight, wide headband and comfortable ear cups make them really fun to wear for long listening sessions, and the sound they produce means that each listening session will be long.
Unfortunately, they’re also expensive: $3,499 / £3,000 / AU$4,999 is double what you’d pay for a Grado Signature pair, about three times the price of similar Sennheisers and about seven times more than I’ve ever been able to spend on headphones. That price tag means it’s out of reach for most of us.
For most musical products the difference between budget and mid-range models is more dramatic than the difference between high end and ultra high end – so for example a $1,000 guitar will be much better than a $250 one, but as you move up the price range the difference starts to become more subtle. I think that’s the case here. If you can easily afford these headphones you’ll love them, but most headphones that cost half that much aren’t scary at all.

Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 review: think again
The Sennheiser HD 800’s are back, the successor to the more bassy HD 800 S is among the best wired headphones out there, and sells for about a third of the price of the Audio-Technicas. And while the fit wasn’t for me, when I reviewed the Grado Signature S750 open players I really liked their sound quality and clarity. Our current favorite among high-end headphones, the Meze Audio 105 Silva, is even cheaper while delivering an excellent sonic experience.
How I tested the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 headphones

I tested the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 for two weeks on various sources and types: vinyl records with an Audio-Technica turntable and an Onkyo A-910 stereo amplifier; CDs with the same amp and the Marantz CD6007 CD player; and streaming, lossless and immersive audio on the Mac mini with the SSL2 audio interface and iFi Zen 2 DAC.
I detailed some of the music I used in the main review but explored a range of artists and genres including acoustic and hyperpop, electronica and EDM, classic rock, alternative rock and chart pop.
