The leading streaming services added a bunch of new movies in April, and I was happy to see a lot of horror titles among them.
April is a strong month for horror with some of the biggest and most original franchises available to watch from the comfort of your living room. The moon is usually associated with pranks and jokes, but if you’re looking for something a little more macabre, I’ve got you covered.
The article continues below
Alien
Watch it open
When: April 1
Where: HBO Max (US); Disney+ (UK, AU)
Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi horror Alien airs throughout April, if you want to revisit one of the greats. And if you haven’t seen this masterpiece of a film, now is the perfect time.
Alien popular for its gory 70s effects, its iconic Xenomorph creature design, and the atmospheric tension built throughout. Other Alien movies can also be found on HBO Max and Disney+, but you really can’t beat the original, even if some people think Aliens it was better!
The Deathstalker
Watch it open
When: April 3
Where: Shudder, AMC+(worldwide)
in 2025 The Deathstalker the 1983 film of the same name. Those looking for dark fantasy won’t want to miss this addition to Shudder’s library, as an alternative to some of the horror movies currently on offer.
Daniel Bernhardt and Patton Oswalt lead the cast of the remake, which follows a powerful swordsman known as the Deathstalker after he finds a cursed amulet on a corpse-filled battlefield. Marked by dark magic and hunted by ruthless killers, he must face the growing evil and break the curse before it’s too late.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
Watch it open
When: April 3
Where: Peacock (US); rent or buy (AU)
Are you ready for Freddy? The sequel arrives at Peacock in April, following a successful box office run. Despite the negative reviews, Freddy Fazbear and friends continue to have a dedicated following, so if you’re into that, you’ll be happy to know it’s going live.
The adaptation of the successful horror game is set a year and a half after the previous movie, where we follow young Abby Schmidt as she is tricked by Marionette, an animatronic from the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza restaurant, who wants revenge on her parents. The Marionette is one of the most terrifying characters in the game, and now you can see it come to life on film.
Earwig
Watch it open
When: April 6
Where: Shudder, AMC+ (worldwide)
Earwig is a weird movie, but if you’re a horror fan, that’s usually recommended. Set in a bleak post-war Europe, we follow a middle-aged man, Albert, as he cares for a little girl named Mia, who has no teeth.
Every day, he makes new dentures for her in the snow, and one day, he is told by a mysterious voice to prepare Mia for the outside world, where she has never been. Described as both melodrama and body horror, it’s a disturbing film that may alienate fans, but I can definitely say that it stuck with me for a while.
Shout out
Watch it open
When: April 10
Where: Netflix (US); Paramount+ (UK); rent or buy (AU)
in 2022 Shout out it’s the fifth entry in the slasher franchise, and why wasn’t it just called that Shout out 5 continues to confuse me. However, don’t let that stop you; a solid film and one of my favorites in the series.
Despite the name, it is not a revival; instead, it focuses on new casting for the entire cast, although original stars like Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell reprise their roles.
A Quiet Place Part II
Watch it open
When: April 11
Where: Netflix (US); Paramount+ (UK); rent or buy (AU)
Forward A Quiet Place Part III, due next year, why not reach the second of the successful horror series? It will arrive on Netflix for US audiences, while UK audiences can watch on Paramount+.
A Quiet Place Part II continues to focus on the Abbott family (minus Lee’s John Kransinski) as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world populated by blind aliens with a keen sense of hearing, so it’s important that they watch how much noise they make. Horror doesn’t get much worse than this.
Dolly
Watch it open
When: April 24
Where: Shudder, AMC+ (worldwide)
Finally, at the end of April, we did it Dolly. Baby dolls are a staple in the horror genre, just look at Annabelle and Chucky, but this movie scared me from the synopsis alone.
Terror strikes when Macy and her boyfriend Chase are attacked while camping, and Macy is kidnapped by a tall, terrifying figure who treats her like a living doll. NWA wrestler Max the Impaler stars in the title role, making it their first film.
