From smart locks again security cameras move forward followers and heaters, I checked a lot home technology products last year (and starting with more this year). And sometimes, a product works so well in my home that I get a personal version of it to keep around — that’s a huge compliment.
If you’re looking for a unique home appliance that can be hassle-free and just what you need, this is the place to start. Here’s a selection I’ve added, covering a wide variety of prices and purposes that may work for your home, too.

Emporia smart plug
Emporia smart plug in wood table.
A classic smart plug is a simple matter, a plug-in device that can automate and program the turned-off features of whatever you plug into, such as a lamp, coffee maker or fountain. The Emporia model is a plug (15A) that goes beyond its intensive power management functions, helping you to save on electricity consumption.
The smart plug has very unique features that allow you to adjust the off functions to match the off-peak hours. If your utility charges more for peak hour usage, that’s an easy way to save money on big things. Also, you can log in regularly and check detailed charts of energy usage by hour, day, week or month. I also like how you can quickly sign in by signing in as your Google account, so setup is a breeze.
I’ve been using this smart plug for a stand alone heater, but it’s time to switch soon, maybe to an air purifier, to see how much electricity it uses throughout the day. With a plug like this, the possibilities are everywhere.
SwitchBot Air Quality Monitor
SwitchBot’s comprehensive air monitoring solution works in any part of your home.
I am already a fan of satellite sensors smart thermostatswhich allows the thermostat to respond to the temperature in the specific area where the sensor is placed. But this SwitchBot does more. Right out of the box, it starts sensing temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide wherever you place it. That’s great for checking air quality levels in places where I’m curious about monitoring conditions, like a bedroom or kitchen.
You can customize the refresh times, opt to receive alerts about dangerous levels of air quality and with a long-lasting battery (mine lasted a full year), you can move the sensor whenever you want. In the winter, I’m thinking of moving it closer to the gas fireplace to see how much air pollution it causes. Maybe I’ll move to cleanse my spirit around again.
Google Nest Cam floodlight
The Google Nest floodlight cam is so useful I haven’t bothered to download it yet.
I originally started testing the Google Nest Cam floodlight model in conjunction with my review of the ADT Plus security platform. That test with the ADT system has long since ended, but I have continued to use the Nest Cam floodlight in my yard with the Google Home app (where I can also see my doorbell at the same time). The LED light was easy to handle (and very bright at high settings), the magnetic base made the camera easy to angle correctly, and Google’s free AI object detection remains one of my favorites. What don’t you like?
However, fair warning — you do you need to put the camera in, and the work of wiring the ladder is not exactly fun, so prepare accordingly. Also, this is a great value camera: You get what you pay for, but you might also want to consider waiting until the sales drop to around $200.
Echo Show 11
Echo Show 11 is the best program yet.
What makes a smart display better than a smart speaker if you don’t plan on watching a lot of videos? For me, it’s information on a screen that I can look at at a glance. In the kitchen, where my Echo Show 11 lives, that often means checking recipe details or mixing multiple times to see how much time is left and just looking, something the speaker can’t do.
Plus, those extra video features can grow on you, especially with the 11-inch large screen that makes for a great little TV. Watching the news collection in the morning while having tea or coffee can be a simple habit. The same goes for sports highlights, a music video you really want to see or a social media post you have to see for a joke. If you’re more focused on the app around the house, iPad docking works just as well (it’s more expensive).
Kelvin smart heater
Kelvin’s heater is one of the best I’ve found for radiant heat.
Space heaters can be energy hungry and create dangerous fire hazards, even if you have one. Kelvin is a smart heater with a completely different approach. It is a radiant heater that hangs on the wall like a picture, saving space with very little fire risk. That also means I can use the app to schedule the heater to turn on and start heating ahead of time before anyone is in the room. That app also helps you track energy and monitor savings depending on your local rates and settings. Overall, it was the type of space heater I was looking for, although the initial cost is a bit high.
Petcube wireless pet fountain
The Petcube wireless mini fountain improves drinking water with several smart features.
In all of them Domestic sources have been testedThe Petcube has the best design: it is durable and easy to clean with easy-to-handle filters. The streaming fountain is silent and works with motion detection. You can use the app to monitor filter changes and cleaning, too. The battery is good for about 3 weeks of average use, but you can also store it in the charging pad if you and your pet choose. This is for cats and small dogs, not large pets.
SnapPower Guidelight 2 night light
These stores come in various designs and shades to match your home, too.
When I first tested this auto-dimming night light, I thought I’d go back to my old night light after I was done. But the Guidelight 2 continued to be a useful light. It’s built into the outlet cover itself, freeing up the outlet for use (for a laptop charger, in my case).
The dimming function means that the LED lights only come on as it gets dark, and will light up as the room grows. The original LED bulb was a little harsh, but there is a small switch to change it to a warm color that is perfect for home lighting. I was left without complaint.
SwitchBot leak detector
The SwitchBot leak detector is a bit bulky, but Wi-Fi ready and easy to set up in minutes.
I’ve always been a fan of leak detectors that do quiet but robust service in homes and connect to remote notification apps so you know when something’s wrong even when you’re not home. That’s useful for any kind of flooding, but my version of the SwitchBot has a permanent spot under the kitchen sink, where I’ve had problems with leaks before.
The switchBot model is a bit larger compared to other detectors, but it has an on-board siren and Wi-Fi connection for the app, and it’s easy to set up. Once it’s in place, I don’t have to worry about it until the worst happens — or I get a “replace the battery” warning in a few years.
Arlo Home Security System
The Arlo home security system is very compact and allows me to choose what I want to monitor.
When I don’t check great security servicesMy security needs for arming/disarming are very simple. That’s why I’m so excited to test this Arlo kit. It’s ultracompact, with two sensors that can do just about anything I need, including monitoring door opening and closing, motion detection, smoke and temperature alerts and more. It’s great for covering a few spots that I want to focus on without getting into a big system with a lot of requirements, and there’s no need for a contract or monthly fees, either (but you can get professional supervision if you want).
