SupergirlThe official trailer has hit the internet – and, while I’m still very excited to see it, the latest round of footage has given me cause for concern.
The last part of that statement is something I can easily say. Supergirl is one of my most anticipated new movies of 2026, and everything I’ve seen and heard about it – until its latest tea, anyway – has filled me with confidence that it’s worth the wait.

However, now a part of me is trembling with its arrival. Not because of who is involved, what the DC Universe (DCU) movie looks like, or the grand vision its creative team created. No, my concernis from my expectations within how this comedy film is adapted it should be, rather than what the will be.

A super duper entry
As soon as part of the DCU Chapter One’s movie and TV show line up was announced for January 2023, there was only one source Supergirl he would find inspiration: Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow.
An eight-issue graphic novel series written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely, Future Wife is widely considered one of the best DC comic book stories of the last decade. An intimate study of two-handers and character-driven westerns, it quickly garnered praise from fans and critics alike following its initial June 2021 release.
As a longtime fan of these comic book miniseries, I was excited to hear that Supergirl’s first big screen outing in four decades would be a direct adaptation of this award-winning literary work. That was evidenced by the fact that, at the time, it would have the same name as its comic book counterpart (NOTE: it’s not called that anymore, and I’ll explain why later in this article).
My happiness has increased because SupergirlThe release date of June 26, 2026 was many months later. Milly Alcock’s casting as the DCU’s Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, the actress’ scene-stealing cameo in 2025 Superman movie, and launched last December SupergirlThe first trailer among other things that reveals the expectations made me very happy. That was until its official trailer dropped on March 31.
Tomorrow’s wife, today’s problems

I will preface this section by saying that SupergirlThe latest teaser gave me chills. Set to an epic rendition of Jimmy Ruffin’s ‘What Becomes of the Brokehearted’ – one of my favorite soul songs, FYI – it looks and sounds great, and I already know it’s going to hit me hard when I finally get the full movie.
However, the DCU movie seems to be a little out of whack Future Wife‘s story, but also How will be told.
The superhero Kara Zor-El is part of the title of the graphic novel, but she is not the point-of-view character of her story. That person is Ruthye, a young female warrior who enlists Kara’s help to track down the space pirate who killed Ruthye’s father.
Ruthye is still a big part of this film – that’s evident in how prominent she is Supergirlvarious captions and the fact that actress Eve Ridley appears at the top of her cast list. To find out more about who joins Alcock and Ridley on the movie list, see mine Supergirl actor and character guide.
However, all signs so far point to Alcock’s unknown metahuman being the main focus of this DCU flick Chapter One, rather than supporting the main character.
And, look, I hear you: you don’t hire someone with Alcock’s talent and don’t give them a high salary. Plus, it’s not announcing Kara Zor-El’s first big screen outing since 1984. Supergirl – the only time he’s had a standalone live-action film, either – and it doesn’t make him a character, especially when his pseudonym is in the title.
The problem I have, however, is that this changes a lot Future Wifethe story of. By taking the main focus away from Kara, I’m worried that Ruthye’s character will be secondary to the main plot of the movie (I’ll get into that soon). If so, it would disturb the core theme at the heart of the Future Wifenarrative — that forgiveness is a more powerful weapon than revenge will ever be.
It is a motif that can be further lost in what it appears to be SupergirlMain story line.
As its latest trailer reveals, Krypto the Superdog is badly injured when his super villain Krem shoots him with a poison dart before Krem flies off into the unknown, stealing Kara’s ship. As Ruthye reveals that Krypto only has three days left to live unless the antidote to Krem’s poison is administered, the once skeptical Kara is given a greater reason to join Ruthye in her quest to hunt down Krem.
Okay, this is also the main fulcrum Future Wifeplan, as well Supergirl will tread the same narrative ground for textual inspiration. But, with Kara and the lovely flexible Krypto put forward Supergirl‘s two trailers, it’s clear that a lot will depend on this relationship – especially since, Clark Kent / Superman aside, Krypto is the only thing that Kara has to remind him of their late world of Krypton.
Also, I understand why Kara’s bond with Krypto took center stage. That is especially true if it allows Supergirl exploring Kara’s lingering trauma about the destruction of Krypton and the subsequent death of her parents, and what it would do to her if she too lost Krypto.
However, I fear that it will not only overshadow the Ruthye-led story, but also change it drastically Future WifeA timeline of events. The comic miniseries takes place over several months, but, with that three-day window to save Krypto, I’m also afraid that its entire story will be cut short. That would be dangerous, because it would greatly reduce the time Kara and Ruthye spend together orbiting the cosmos and, by proxy, the happy but occasionally troubled relationship they build on their interstellar journey.
The changes have been for the better
There are other features of Supergirl that matches me – Krem’s physical appearance compared to his main comic book counterpart between them. Equally, however, there are diversions from the source material that I look forward to seeing.
Future Wife it only gives insight into Kara’s painful memories of Krypton, though Supergirl it seems like it will make things disappear and give us a lot of insight into it why he is. I went down again with many appearances in David Corenswet’s Man of Steel following his great performance last year. Superman flick.
Then there’s Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Originally, the Czarnian bounty hunter was supposed to be involved Future Wifebut the King and Bilquis cut him off from the story at the last minute. Now, Supergirl offers a chance to see how he would fit into the story of a graphic novel – and, if DC Studios boss James Gunn is to be believed, Lobo will be an integral part of Supergirlthe story of. Let’s hope there is some substance to those claims.
Those compelling additions notwithstanding, any movie trailer is specially designed to tease its story and cheer for its eventual release. That is possible SupergirlThe latest sizzle reel doesn’t show how its story will play out. For all I know, it can do it the same way Future Wife.
That said, I’m not sure it will. Last June, Gunn revealed that the comic book movie would no longer be called Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow; his argument is that he is “sick” of seeing films with subtitles. That may be true but, thanks to its new trailer, I also believe it is Supergirl it will be a reimagining of the aforementioned graphic novel, rather than a direct adaptation. What is the point of the subtitle ‘The Woman of Tomorrow’, if it is not a true retelling of the graphic novel?
Let me be clear one last time: I am still incredibly curious to see Supergirl when it finally flies into theaters. Given the many other book and film adaptations, I should have expected that it wouldn’t be a beat-for-beat retelling. Future Wifeor. Still, I’m still bummed that I won’t get the comic book adaptation I wanted – and I hope that, whatever creative liberties were taken, Supergirl It’s still as big as the expectations I set for you.
