Design and Build Quality

One of the standout features of these Helinox Passport poles is their fixed height folding design. The poles measure 115 cm when folded, providing a comfortable height for most users. When folded, they collapse to a compact 35 cm, allowing for easy packing and carrying, even in small bags or luggage. This makes them an excellent choice for travelers and anyone who prioritizes space-saving gear without compromising on functionality. Most folding poles are longer than 35 cm and heavier than Passport poles, even if they are made of carbon fiber and not aluminum. For example, they easily fit into my Amazon staples (top photo).

The poles are made of DAC aluminum alloy, a material known for its strength and weight. This ensures that the poles are strong enough to handle rough terrain but light enough to avoid fatigue during long journeys. Weighing only 11.3 oz (320 g) per pair, these poles are among the lightest in their class, improving comfort during extended use. You can reduce their weight further by removing the velcro strips that hold the poles closed when not in use.

Features and functionality

The Passport TL115 has a three-stage folding mechanism connected by an internal cable with a tension-lock system. This design allows for quick and secure deployment with a simple locking button, so users can set up or anchor the poles along the way. The fixed length nature of the poles means that no adjustment is required during use, which can be seen as a convenience or limitation. If you are using a trekking pole backpacking tent, you probably want a separate set of adjustable height poles instead, so you can raise or lower your tent in high winds or when pitching on uneven ground.

Comfort is prioritized with an EVA foam grip that provides a soft yet firm grip even in sweaty or rainy conditions. Adjustable wrist straps add extra security and help reduce hand strain by distributing pressure evenly. For added flexibility, rubber tip covers are included to protect against wear on hard surfaces such as pavement or rock, while tungsten carbide tips provide excellent mobility on uneven and slippery surfaces due to their sharp profile.

Usability and performance

The Helinox Passport TL115 poles excel in delivering stability and reliable support during hiking. Their lightweight design reduces arm fatigue, and DAC’s durable aluminum shafts withstand normal external stresses without bending or breaking. The fixed height makes it easy to use for those who prefer less fussy equipment, making them ideal for regular travelers who want reliable support without complicated maintenance.

Thanks to the compact folded size, these poles fit well in daypacks or luggage, enhancing their appeal for multi-day trips or touring situations where reducing the bulk of gear is important. Although some users may miss the flexibility of the adjustable length poles, the fixed length of 115 cm is a good fit for most hikers of medium height.
